ARGENTINA IN COOPERATION WITH CARIBBEAN COUNTRIES

An agreement signed between CAP and the Barbados Beekeeping Association promises to expand the horizons of american beekeeping.

Members of the Pampero Beekeeping Cooperative and the Laboratory of Beekeeping Studies (LabEA), carried out in July the first mission to the countries of Barbados and Dominica as part of the «API Caribbean» project, funded by FO.AR, the Argentine Embassy in Barbados and IICA.

API CARIBBEAN PROYECT

The Caribbean islands have incredible potential to offer hive products with excellent quality. Beekeeping in these places is a developing activity. There are few beekeepers, but with great experience and good management of their hives, grouped in associations or cooperatives. Working together is a fundamental pillar to be able to raise beekeeping quality to its best.

The «API Caribe» project, coordinated by Juan Martin Naveyra, seeks to increase the production of honey and other products from the hive through the cooperation of Argentine specialists in beekeeping, scientific studies, and market development in Barbados, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Lucia.

In a first mission the apiaries of Barbados and Dominica were visited to analyze the productive capacities and know the customs of the local beekeepers. At the end of the visits, technical training was given according to the previous evaluation carried out.

FUTURE ACTIONS

New missions are planned in the future, including a credit line for initiation in beekeeping, trials with CAP products to measure effectiveness in the local environment, training in quality control of honey, pollen and propolis; and crop pollination techniques.

In addition, the exchange of products derived from honey between different associations is expected, in order to promote their development and export skills. This way, the honey market will expand in both countries, increasing the diversity of honey types and brands.

This mission was the beginning of a very important project for American beekeeping and a great example of cooperation between American countries; beekeepers, technicians, and researchers.

How does one get assistance from your program in Barbados?
I am not involved with politics, and do want to be involved with any beekeeping organization in Barbados.
